BWP were honoured to receive a visit on Thursday (8 April 2021) from the Home Secretary, Priti Patel to discuss male violence against women and girls. The visit made BBC East Midlands Today, which features Colette Byrne, BWP’s first CEO.
Colette, along with other key members of the BWP team advised the Home Secretary on how Lockdown has affected the women and children we support.
Colette said: “We anticipate more women approaching us for our services, and we anticipate that more children that have witnessed abuse at home during lockdown will end up on our waiting list.”
Colette added: “When we were approach by Caroline Henry to ask if we would like a chance to discuss Domestic Abuse with the Home Secretary, we jumped at it (although we were shocked and excited). The whole team at BWP work tirelessly to support and empower women and children affected by Domestic Abuse, so we were incredibly proud to be able to talk to the Home Secretary about the vital work we do, and importantly the changes that need to happen within the law and family law courts that could better support, not penalise survivors of Domestic Abuse.
“We feel confident that she will go on to address these in Government.”
